Frequently Asked Questions About Home Flame Detectors:
Yes, you can download the Home Flame Detector user guide here.
Smoke alarms work by detecting small particles of combustion (smoke) that must travel into the smoke alarm’s sensing chamber before alarming. If those particles cannot or do not find their way into the sensing chamber, it will not alarm.
Flame Detectors, on the other hand, constantly monitor for the presence of flame in your home and works by detecting a narrow band of ultraviolet light produced by the flame. The moment the flame is seen, you’re notified. It’s that simple!
It’s easy. You can test it with both feet safely on the ground using a real flame so you know it’s a realistic test (a lighter works great).
Do Flame Detectors have False Alarms? Unlike smoke alarms, dust, insects, and steam have no effect on the performance of Flame Detector. In fact, we have thousands of hours of testing with no false alarms.
Yes. For many years NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, has recommended that smoke alarms be installed inside and outside bedrooms and on every level of the home (even for existing homes). Consult your local codes for more information.
How are flames detected? This is a quested we often get. Flames are detected using an ultraviolet sensor that responds to the ultraviolet light produced by a flame. There is no other residential product on the market today that uses this technology.
Where do I put my flame detector? This is a very good question. Your home Flame Detector is intended for any indoor space where you never want a flame. Some good examples include bedrooms, bonus rooms, playrooms, and laundry rooms.
How do I mount my Flame Detector? There are numerous mounting options. You can decide which fits best for your space, but we’ve designed our Flame Detectors with utmost flexibility.
Sitting it on a shelf or bookcase or using the supplied bracket invites additional mounting options. The bracket can be installed on any flat surface horizontally or vertically. It can even be used on an inside corner (where two walls meet) for a vertical mount or, where the ceiling meets the wall for a horizontal mount. Our Flame Detectors have built-in magnets that allow for a secure connection to the bracket if you choose wall mounting.
Generally, you will achieve a wider field of view in a space when mounted horizontal instead of vertical. Pretend you are looking through the center “Eye” and pick a spot that provides the greatest view of the space.
The best way to know about your coverage is to test your Flame Detector using a real flame. It’s that easy – but make sure you’re careful. A lighter or a match works well for this test.
How much area will a Flame Detector cover? Flame Detectors have an approximate 130-degree field of view and can detect a ¾” flame in less than 2 seconds at around 20 feet away. The larger the flame, the further away your flame detector will detect it.
Is my new flame detector functioning? Flame Detectors from the team at Forge Technologies are designed to periodically report the units health status to the cloud, and if the sensor malfunctions, you will receive a push notification.
If my Wi-Fi goes out will my Flame Detector still work? Your Flame Detector will still alarm, but you will not receive push notifications.
Why are flame detectors not UL listed? Currently, there is no established UL standard for any residential flame detector.
How often do I have to replace the batteries in my Flame Detector? We’ve cut the cord – the 3 AA included batteries will power your Flame Detector for at least a year. Don’t worry about remembering to replace them though – your Flame Detector App will send your smart device a push notification once they need changing and will even speak to you (but not in the middle of the night like smoke alarms often do).
How many Flame Detector units do I need? You only need one Flame Detector per room, but you can certainly install more than one device in the same space to obtain maximum coverage.
What is the Pro Model Flame Detector? Currently in the final stages of development, Flame Detector PRO adds an additional layer of protection and sophistication by not only looking for the presence of flame but also for the presence of people. Just like the revolutionary Flame Detector, Flame Detector PRO constantly monitors for flame, BUT ALSO uses occupancy detection to establish whether flame is born “friendly” (human produced) or “hostile” (started on its own).
The Flame Detector Pro is designed to be placed in rooms where friendly fire might occur – like your kitchen (with a gas stove) or living room (with a fireplace). While the flagship Flame Detector is meant for rooms where you NEVER want to have open flame.
How do I maintain my Flame Detector? Aside from changing the batteries as needed, maintenance is simple. Be sure to keep the center “eye” (flame sensor) free of dust and fingerprints and test the unit monthly by simply lighting a match or lighter.
Are your Flame Detectors Warrantied? Flame Detector will be free from defects in material and workmanship or design under normal use and service for a period of one year from the date of purchase. The obligation limited to repairing or replacing the unit or any part which we find to be defective in material, workmanship, or design, free of charge to the customer. This warranty shall not apply to the unit if it has been damaged, modified, abused, or altered after the date of purchase.
